The European Commission has recognised “REW-ITA green HUB”, OMCD TEK HUB’s project dedicated to tungsten recovery and recycling, as a Strategic Project under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).

Why are critical raw materials so important?

Today, many industrial supply chains rely heavily on imports from non-EU countries, creating significant economic and strategic vulnerabilities. To address this challenge, the European Union introduced the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), a regulation designed to strengthen Europe’s capacity to source, process and recycle raw materials within the EU, while reducing dependence on non-EU suppliers.

In this context, recovering raw materials from end-of-life products and industrial scrap plays a crucial role. It allows existing resources to be put back to use, making supply chains more autonomous, secure and resilient.

The project

REW-ITA green HUB – Recovery of Wolfram: Italian Technology Advanced green Hub is a project promoted by OMCD TEK HUB to establish an industrial hub in Italy dedicated to recovering and recycling tungsten from Hard Metal scrap. Depending on the composition of the scrap processed, the project will also enable the recovery of cobalt, copper and silver.

The project provides for a gradual increase in production capacity between 2026 and 2030, with investments aimed both at consolidating OMCD TEK HUB’s recycling process and exploring new approaches through participation in pilot projects, some of which are funded by the European Commission. These initiatives will help expand the range of waste materials that can be recycled.

An European recognition of excellence

The European Commission has recognised 46 Strategic Projects across 16 EU Member States, including just five in Italy.

For OMCD TEK HUB, this recognition highlights the value of the approach the company has been pursuing in recent years, bringing together environmental sustainability and supply security. Developing an European source of recycled tungsten means reusing materials already available, reducing dependence on foreign markets, minimising waste and helping ensure continuity of supply for manufacturers that rely on this strategic raw material.

With REW-ITA green HUB, the OMCD Group reaffirms its commitment to a circular, competitive and forward-looking industrial model.
